Today I spent a good bit of time in SRM's Library, doing research on The Telegraph and other civil war Railroads. As I flipped threw the ledgers regarding one railroad operating in 1863, the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western, I found a list of locomotives being run under union army control. The locomotive being run as fallowed
Naitoches
Terrebonne
New Orleans
Sabine
Tiger
and finally, written unceremoniously into the ledger. "Leased W&A Texas"
The Texas! I found the Texas...in NEW ORLEANS!!!!!! Being run by THE UNION ARMY!!!!
This came as one huge surprise. As 1862 drew to a close, W&A leased the Texas, but what happened to the locomotive is unknown. All we do know is that in 1866, the locomotive was reported in Saltville Virginia. Apparently, somewhere in the frew The Texas went to New Orleans to work on the NOO&GW, and when that line was captured and run by the Union, Texas was run along with it.
Ironic, it turns out that after rescuing the General, the gallant ol' Texas was captured in the end.
This is so exciting, I finally have a starting point to fallow the Texas and find out exactly what happened in the "Missing years" Already I contacted the chapter historian and its created quite a frenzy.

Here is something to help your research along
" (The Texas) moved back to Georgia following the war, the Texas again served the W&ARR during the postbellum Reconstruction era. The locomotive was renumbered and renamed as the Cincinnati in 1880. It remained in service until 1903."
But after that she was left for scrap. But the engine was considered significant by people for inspiring the medal of honor and what not... So they fought to preserve it. Which they succeeded and it is in Atlanta
Hope that helps!
